Burlington Robert “Bob” Kelly, age 72 of Burlington, passed away Tuesday, January 17, 2012 at Hillsdale Community Health Center in Hillsdale, MI. He was born on March 30, 1939 in Battle Creek, MI to Owen and Anita (Zantop) Kelly. Bob graduated from Athens High School in 1957. He was an Army Veteran and was in the Military Police from 1961 to 1963. He came home to the Nottawa Family Farm in Burlington and began a career in the Standardbred Industry racing throughout the U.S.A. and Canada. Bob had a successful career breeding, training and driving horses to many wins. He was an avid horse trader throughout his life. He semi retired from horse racing in 1994 and began working at the bus garage in Union City retiring in 2004. Throughout his retirement he enjoyed trail riding, camping and spending time with his grandchildren. Bob also bred and raised Jack Russell Terriers for many years. He traveled extensively to Nebraska, Texas and Oklahoma to promote the Foundation Quarter Horse and he was a member of the Michigan Harness Horse Association, Foundation Quarter Horse Registry and the AQHA. Bob is survived by his wife Mary; 4 children Deborah Adams of Pittsford, MI, Christopher Kelly of Missouri, Kimberly Wesner of Ann Arbor, MI and Nicole Kelly of Burlington, MI; 9 grandchildren and a sister, Patricia Kelly of Battle Creek. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother Dennis Kelly and one son Leonard Patrick Kelly. Visitation Saturday, January 21st , 2012 from 10:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. with Funeral Services to follow at 1:30 p.m. at the Spencer Family Funeral Home in Athens with Pastor Karleen Kinker officiating. Burial with Military Honors by Athens V.F.W. Post 5319 at Abscota Cemetery. Donations may be directed to the Athens V.F.W. Post 5319. Family and friends are invited immediately after the burial to JD’s Grill in Tekonsha for food and fellowship.

Many childhood memories flood over me these last few days. Always Good !!! How kind he was to Grandma Zantop. My sisters, Linda and Sandy Sue and our brother Hal send prayers to his children.
