James Spoor

Jim graduated from Tri-State University, Angola, Indiana in mechanical engineering in 1964. He was employed as an engineer at the General Motors Technical Center in Warren, Michigan. He graduated from Wayne State University Mortuary School in Detroit, Michigan in 1973. Jim and Joy E. Spencer were married on December 24, 1970. He is a member of the local Lions Club and is a licensed Emergency Medical Technician. He is a member of the Athens Congregational Church. He and Joy have owned and operated the Spencer Family Funeral Home since January 1991.

Joy Spencer Spoor

Joy graduated from Worsham College of Mortuary school in 1962. She also earned an associates degree from Western Michigan University. She continually worked in the family owned funeral business but also became a kindergarten teacher for the Athens School System earning her Bachelors in Elementary Education and her Masters Degree from Western Michigan University. She retired after 38 years of teaching. She and her husband, Jim, are full time directors of the Spencer Family Funeral Home where they carry on the traditions of Joy's father and brother, Paul and Tom Spencer. She belongs to a sorority and AAUW (American Association of University Women), Athens Congregational Church, the Woman's League of Battle Creek, Retired Teachers of Kalamazoo County and Calhoun County, and she is a life member of Michigan Education Association and a member of Chapter No. 59 Eastern Star and a past matron.

Tom Spencer

Thomas Paul Spencer was very active in the funeral home business. He graduated from Worsham Mortuary School in 1957. He married Gloria Voss on December 24, 1960. They have three children, Tomissa, Paula and Paul. Gloria was also active in the family business and played the organ for funerals. Paula and Paul both attended mortuary school. Tom passed away in 1989. Jim and Joy Spoor have carried on with the family business and continue the traditions of Paul and son, Tom, with a flexible, compassionate and personalized service that strives to meet everyone's needs both financially and according to the wishes of the family.
